What does Elo stand for?
It’s the rating system designed by the physicist Arpad Elo. It was originally designed for rating Chess players, but it’s used in most video games with matchmaking / ratings.
It’s essentially a handicapping system, it’s goal in using it in sports is to make it so odds always favor the house…
ELO is a system for ranking players and predicting their chance of winning if they played each other.
“Handicapping” is something found in some sports like golf. If two people are at the golf course with very uneven skill and there’s no one else to play with, if they want to play with each other instead of sitting around waiting for other people to show up, in order to have an entertaining game which isn’t predetermined the better player will take a handicap so they both have a chance of winning.
We have used ELO to figure out if players are predicted to have an “almost impossible to win” match and performed handicapping to compensate but that’s not really ELO — it’s a handicapping system built on top of ELO.
I don’t know of any cases of using ELO in sports to favor the house.
Ranking two uneven players to determine what their chances of winning against each other are. That’s what is done when setting odds in betting and then pushing it to favor the house.
They refuse to just let us play the stupid game. All these ridiculous changes and explanations are just making things worse. MM was frustrating at times before this crap, but I’d take that over the current system any day.
